MAKING FONDANT BOWS
——————-
After sitting here and looking back on them, obviously I should have wrapped the middle piece around the bow! So when it comes to that part, just be sure to make your strip longer ya dig?
——————-
Things You’ll Need:
- Fondant
- Wax Paper
- Confectioners Sugar (Powdered Sugar)
- Rolling Pin (I used a wooden one because I do not have a fondant roller yet)
- Sharp non-serrated knife for cutting
- Food Coloring of your choice
- Small cup of water
- Small paintbrush
I used WalMart bought pre-made fondant. You can find it near the party supplies if your local WalMart has had the crazy reconstructions all the ones around middle TN here have. Check your local bakers store otherwise.
Have all your tools close by and ready to use.
Please watch some videos or read up on tips for basic fondant use before hand if you haven’t ever touched it before!
Lay down your wax paper onto a hard flat surface. Dust your wax paper with the confectioners sugar so that your fondant does not stick. Dust your hands as well, and continue doing both through this entire process so your fondant doesn’t stick. Work your fondant with your hands meading until pliable. Add your food coloring little by little. I used a red gel food coloring also found at WalMart. Work coloring into the fondant, pulling apart, folding, twisting, until it is blended completely. Remember to keep dusting your wax paper or mat from time to time and keep moving your rolled fondant around so it doesn’t stick!
Wash your hands now really well if you aren’t using gloves.
Use some confectioners sugar to dust your rolling pin if it isn’t non stick.
Roll out your fondant. Watch how-to videos on YouTube if you need to see how to do this. Don’t leave them too thick. Don’t leave them too thin.
I found that cutting out a rectangle or square made the next few steps easier.
Cut strips about 5-6 inches long and 1 inch wide. Change this up if you want! Make bigger or smaller bows for all sorts of cupcake and cake decorating!
Cut smaller strips for where you’ll be (not cheating like I did with just small squares) wrapping the middle piece of bow later-on and set to side.
Do the strips one at a time but quickly so your fondant is still mendable for shaping at the end.
Wet your small paint brush and brush a drip or two of water onto the ends of the strips, about an inch in.
Fold both sides into the middle, wet side down and lightly press for the fondant to stick together like so:
With the paintbrush, lightly wet the middle part of the bow.
Now this, again, is where If I were to do this over, I would. I only cut little squares. NOW I would have made them longer and wrapped them around the bow instead of just wetting the square or area and placing them together like so:
From here, I set them up and shaped them how I liked. Where they loop out, I used the end of the paint brush to push them end and make almost a heart shape.
You can use these now, but I do suggest setting them to dry out for at least a few hours if not over night if possible. Plan ahead!
